How I Work

How I Work

Every person’s experiences, struggles and needs are different, which is why I believe therapy should feel personal to you.

I work in a way that is shaped around your individual needs, creating a space where you can feel safe, heard and understood. I use an integrative approach, drawing on therapies such as mindfulness, cognitive behavioural therapy strategies, positive psychology and EMDR where appropriate.

At the heart of my work is a warm, compassionate and non-judgemental approach, while gently supporting you to explore change at a pace that feels right for you.

Sara Austin Safe Space Counselling Northampton

How to Get Started

The relationship between counsellor and client is especially important in order for us to be able to effectively work together. With this in mind I offer a free, no obligation 15-minute video call during which you can give me brief details of why you are seeking counselling and ask me any questions you may have.

If we agree to work together, we can then book an initial session in which we can explore your reasons for seeking counselling and how you would like counselling to help you. The choice to continue or stop will always be yours and I will regularly check in with you to see how you feel things are going.

What Happens Next

All sessions are 50 minutes in length. Initially sessions will ideally be held weekly on the same day and time however I know that some clients need flexibility and wherever possible I will accommodate this.

I offer daytime sessions Monday to Thursday and some early evening sessions.  I work face to face and remotely.

I am also able to offer Walk and Talk sessions during daylight hours (taking the session outside). For some people this is a calming and helpful way of working.

I currently offer both long and short term therapy.

Fees

Fees

I charge £80 per session.

The first session is payable immediately after our first session when we meet and agree to work together.  Every session after that is payable 24 hours in advance.  This secures your session.

Payments are by bank transfer or cash.

"Thank you very much for the counselling sessions over the last 3 months. I found it very helpful to discuss and explore all the things that have happened in my life over the last couple of years and try to make sense of how they have affected me. Your suggestions for different ways of thinking about events and feelings, and your techniques for managing how I react to things have all been very helpful. I now feel much more able to cope with things going forward."

Anxiety

Anxiety

Support for anxiety, overthinking and feeling overwhelmed

Anxiety can show up in many different ways - constant overthinking, a mind that won’t switch off, or a sense of always expecting something to go wrong. It can also be felt in the body, through a racing heart, sickness, tightness in your chest, panic and difficulty sleeping. For some, it builds gradually; for others, it can begin after a stressful event or period of change. However it appears, anxiety can feel exhausting and, at times, quite isolating but you don’t have to manage it on your own.

I offer a calm, supportive space where you can begin to make sense of what you’re experiencing without judgment. Together, we can gently explore the patterns behind your anxiety and find ways to help you feel more grounded, more in control, and less overwhelmed by worry. Reaching out can feel like a big step, but it can also be the start of feeling more like yourself again. If you’re ready, I invite you to get in touch for a free initial consultation.

“I have learnt so much from Sara in the few  months I have been working with her, and I have come away with some invaluable tools and techniques to help me when I need to slow down or quiet my thoughts.  Sara made me feel completely comfortable, and from our very first session I felt incredibly safe and unjudged within her space.  Thank you Sara for all of your support, and for helping me to better navigate life!”

Bereavement & Loss

Bereavement and Loss

Losing someone important in your life can be one of the most painful and confusing experiences we face. Grief can bring many different emotions – sadness, anger, numbness, guilt, or a deep sense of longing for the person who has died. For some people, grief feels overwhelming at times. For others, it can feel strangely quiet or distant. You may also be adjusting to the practical and emotional changes that come with loss, while feeling that the world around you expects life to carry on as normal.

I offer a safe and compassionate space where you can talk about your loss at your own pace. Therapy can help you express feelings that may be difficult to share elsewhere and make sense of the changes grief can bring. Together we can explore your memories, your relationship with the person who has died, and the impact their loss has had on your life.

Grief cannot be rushed or fixed, but having a supportive space to talk can help you feel less alone as you navigate the journey of loss.

Support when you are coping with grief

“Thank you so much for your invaluable support over the last few weeks.  I now feel I have the strategies to support myself and my partner in a better way.  I would happily recommend you.”

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a gentle, evidence-based therapy that helps the brain process difficult or overwhelming experiences that may still feel “stuck.” Sometimes we can understand something logically, but our body and emotions haven’t caught up. EMDR works with the brain’s natural healing processes, helping memories feel less intense and reducing the emotional impact they can carry in everyday life.

Many people find that EMDR helps them feel calmer, less reactive, and more able to move forward without being pulled back by past experiences. I offer EMDR in a safe, supportive space where you can go at your own pace, with care and compassion at the centre of the work. If you’re feeling ready to explore a different way of processing what you’ve been carrying, EMDR may be a helpful step.

“Thank you so much for the last 20 months. I feel like I’ve shed so much emotional weight from my first session to my last.  I very quickly became comfortable with you and could speak freely without fear of judgement.  I’ve always felt like I was an open person who could go to family and friends with my problems and anxieties, but you helped me to dive deeper and question if I was being fair on myself and interpreting my opinion of myself as fact. I can now question myself when I start to beat myself up, recognise when I am spiralling and know what I can do to stop.”

Depression

Depression

Depression can feel like being trapped in your own mind — the overthinking, the low moods that are hard to explain, or the sense of simply going through the motions without really feeling present. You might notice yourself withdrawing from people and things you once enjoyed, feeling irritable or tearful, or waking with a heaviness that’s hard to shift. It can be exhausting carrying this day after day, especially when part of you is quietly wondering if things will ever feel different. Whatever you’re experiencing, it matters and you don’t have to face it on your own.

I offer a warm, compassionate space where you can be heard without judgment and supported at your own pace. Together, we can gently explore what’s been weighing on you and find ways to help you feel more like yourself again. Reaching out can feel like a big step, but it can also be the start of meaningful change. If you’re ready, I invite you to get in touch for a free initial consultation and take that first step forward.

Support for low mood, feelings of emptiness and emotional exhaustion

“Working with Sara over the last couple of months is best described as coming to her with a bag full of scrunched up paper, each session picking  one piece of scrunched up paper, unscrunching it and neatly folding it back

up to form a tidy stress-free pile. Her safe space has created an environment for me to revisit some past events, work out their effect on me and how to manage my behaviours to them moving forward. I now feel the confidence to cope with things independently moving forward. Thank you for your work!”

Adolescents & Young Adults

Adolescents and Young Adults

Counselling and Mentoring

Adolescence and young adulthood can be a time of intense change - emotionally, socially, and personally. Many young people find themselves feeling overwhelmed, anxious, unsure of who they are, or struggling with pressure from school, relationships, or expectations about the future. At times, this can show up as low mood, withdrawal, anger, or a sense of not quite fitting in. However it presents, these experiences can feel confusing and difficult to navigate, both for young people and for those supporting them.

With much experience of working with this age group I offer a warm, supportive space where adolescents and young adults can talk openly and feel truly heard, without judgment or pressure. My approach is gentle, collaborative, and tailored to each individual, helping them explore their thoughts and emotions at a pace that feels right. Together, we can build understanding, strengthen confidence, and develop ways to cope with life’s challenges. Reaching out for support at this stage can make a meaningful difference, and I welcome you to get in touch for a free initial consultation.

“When first meeting Sara I was in such a dark place that I didn't believe there was a way through. But Sara helped me in small manageable pieces and helped me to make my world bigger in my own helpful way. She did this with her great coping mechanisms, her listening and hearing me out and advocating for me. Sara made me feel heard and I'm thankful for that. I would easily recommend her.”

Stress

Stress

Stress can show up in so many ways - sleepless nights, constant overwhelm, or the quiet pressure of feeling like you’re not keeping up. You might find yourself snapping at loved ones, struggling to focus, or feeling exhausted no matter how much you rest. Over time, it can leave you feeling drained, stuck, or disconnected from yourself. Whatever you’re experiencing, it makes sense and you don’t have to carry it on your own.

I offer a warm, supportive space where you can slow things down and begin to make sense of what’s been weighing on you. Together, we’ll gently explore the causes of your stress and find ways to help you feel more balanced, clear, and in control again. Taking that first step might feel difficult, but it can also be the beginning of real change. If you’re ready, I invite you to get in touch for a free initial consultation and start finding your way back to yourself.

Support in coping when life is overwhelming

“From the beginning Sara was so understanding and welcoming and adapted to what I needed right away. It was the highlight of my week to go and see her, knowing how much she was going to help me. She helped my confidence, created coping methods to calm me down and helped me find ways to stop or change the things that weren't making me feel great.  Thankyou for changing my life in a positive way.
